Well thank you, Alex Sanderson, for understanding the location for Grainboys is not the best one.
This township did not have to give the impression we are against industry. This council would have been smarter to agree to work with Grainboys to find a more suitable location instead of rolling over and approving it.
There is the land along Durham 30 where there are gravel pits and industrial businesses, and it backs onto the full industrial land at Hwy. 47, yet I have not seen or heard of one motion by council to have the planner look into the rezoning of this land so we can accommodate more industry.
How about the land off Conc. 6, as it will be serviced; that would be perfect for more industry instead of more homes.
Also, did you know that Grainboys are currently in Aurora, and the farmer that spoke at the meeting [on April 8] has to travel two and a half hours to sell his grain (sometimes longer), and when asked why he would travel that far when Aurora is just around the corner, the answer was Grainboys is too small to take the amount of grain he has to sell. Also, they don’t take the type of grain he has, as no one in this township grows poppy seeds, sesame seeds; some locals grow sunflower seeds, and this is the bulk, along with other seeds and some grains, that Grainboys use.
So this grain mill that we have all been led to believe will benefit local farmers will only be a benefit when they start growing smaller amounts of grain and the seeds that Grainboys count on.
So why is it being built in a residential area, where residents will lose their investment on their homes? This won’t benefit the farmers either, as the residents will move or not be able to afford to buy fresh and local food. Nobody wins with this mess, that’s for sure.
